Low Sperm Count Tips

A low sperm count means that the fluid (semen) that ejaculates during an orgasm contains small quantity of sperm than normal.

A low sperm count is also called oligospermia. A complete absence of semen is called azoospermia. It is considered that your sperm count is lower than normal if you have less than 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen.

Having a low sperm count reduces the chances of one of your sperm fertilizing your partner’s egg, resulting in pregnancy. However, many men who have a low sperm count can still raise a child.

The main sign of low sperm count is the inability to perceive a child. There may be no other obvious signs or symptoms. In some men, an underlying problem such as a hereditary chromosomal abnormality, a hormonal imbalance, dilated testicular tissue or a sperm blocking condition can cause signs and symptoms.

Symptoms of low sperm count may include:

  • Problems with sexual function, for example, low sexual desire or difficulty maintaining an erection (erectile dysfunction).
  • Pain, swelling, or a lump in the testicular area.
  • Reduction of facial or body hair or other signs of chromosomal or hormonal abnormalities.
