Ways to Prevent Crimes in Nigeria | By Ogunobi Oluwaseyi Mary

Crimes in the society is forbidden and it is punishable as well, by law, the reason is because when once a crime is committed, or there is a criminal offense, it is simply an act that is harmful to either an individual or some individuals, it could be harmful to either community or society, even to a state.

Below are ways to prevent crimes in Nigeria:

1. Cooperation with law enforcement agencies:

To prevent crimes in Nigeria, there is a need to collaborate and work with relevant public agencies that could assist in curbing crimes in the Nigerian society.

Such agencies could be neighborhood-based or it could be community-wide, but whichever way, they should be on the ground to help solve crimes problems in the society.

2. Provision of employment for youth

It is said that the idle hand is a devil’s workshop, going by this fact, it is, therefore, important to have youths engaged in positive and profitable ventures.

Government and concerned businessmen should employ youth for them to be engaged with some work. Since unemployment is one of the causes of crime in Nigeria, the Provision of employment should be its cure.

3. Setting up of community “watchdog”

Community watchdog is a community-based security group that is after the maintenance of law and order in the community.

Most time, members of this group are youth from the community, so they can supervise or monitor any suspicious activity in their community and make report to necessary law enforcement agencies or prevent it themselves.

4. Campaign against crime and delinquency

All concerned organizations in the community such as schools, law enforcement agencies, the public health agencies, even other workplaces, including religious institutions and other such agencies within the neighborhood should work assiduously to ensure that, crimes are prevented.

5. Community Engagement

Talk with children in the neighborhood about what worries or scares them and about where and how they have felt threatened by violence. Interview teachers, school staff, crossing guards, and bus aides.

6. Anti-violence courses

Adoption of anti-violence courses that help children learn ways to manage anger without using fists or weapons.

We need all to fight against criminal activities.
